Firstly you need to understand what you actually want from it.
Do you want to take a fist, use larger toys, enjoy more pounding, or explore deeper? You do not need a perfect long-term plan, but having a direction makes it much easier to choose the right tools and plan.
In a first session, don’t think of making a lot progress. Fingers, and 1 or 2 small smooth dildos (with gradual taper shape or pointed head) are enough. Learn how to relax your full body and how to control your sphincter before everything. If a gentle touch on anus makes you feel sensitive and clench, you are not ready for stretching.

Here are some things I do.
I douche according to the kind of session I am planning, make sure the room feels private, and put everything I may need within reach. That usually means towels/kitchen roll, lube, and several possible toys, including a larger advanced tool I may not use.
Of course, trimmed nails, plenty of lube, patience and motivation is also in need.

Don’t spend too much time on it before every session. For regular training, I usually rely on a shallow rinse with a small amount of water, repeated several times until water out is clear and there is no left water in. The waits between rounds for leftover check are important.
Once all the water out looks clear during and after a round of rinsing, I prefer to stop and wait rather than keep rinsing indefinitely. I usually leave some time before training and may do one final shallow check if I feel I need it.
I used to worry that stopping too early meant I had not cleaned enough. But when I rinsed too deeply, preparation often became longer, more tiring, and less predictable. I could end up disturbing areas that probably would not have affected the session at all. Now I prepare for what I am actually planning to do. An entrance-focused training session does not require the same routine as a deep fisting session.

The safest number I would say is above 25 cm (10 in) circumference, I mean, after managing such size you can try take a fist almost without pain. I took the first hand when I was only able to ride on a toy with a girth of about 20 cm (8 in). It hurt back then. Just for a reference.
If fisting is your main goal, focus on the entrance and entrance tunnel (anal canal): gradually building enough width, learning to relax under pressure, and becoming comfortable with short controlled movement. You don’t necessarily need to master a long shaft or train very deep.
Short and wide plug-like tools with a gradual progression can help build width. The entrance and the tunnel part inside should be stretched, therefore a bulb or oval shape tool like a clenched fist is helpful.
My own plan goes deeper because I eventually want full-arm adaptation. Someone who only wants an initial fist does not need to copy that entire path.
